College Scholarships
In the United States, Rugby is primarily a club sport played on college campuses. Players generally pay their participation fees and the university may help the teams with access to training and competition facilities and financial help to cover some expenses. Given Rugby’s status as a college club sport, there are currently no full club rugby scholarships available at universities or colleges in the United States. For information about scholarships for NCAA women's varsity rugby, please visit NCAA Scholarships.
USA RUGBY is aware of only a few American Universities that currently give certain scholarships or stipends for club rugby players. These include:
American International College - A four-year private school college located in Springfield, MA, is offering over $100,000 in scholarships for the men’s and women’s rugby programs. The team is starting this year and is being considered a Varsity B program with full backing from university officials from top to bottom. Prospective players will enjoy use of varsity facilities and trainers, and receive the person-first education a private school can offer. Interested players are encouraged to contact Head Coach Josh Macy through his e-mail ([email protected]) or blog (coachingchronicle.blogspot.com). While admissions and academic info can be found at www.aic.edu or through a Facebook search of “AIC Rugby.”
Arkansas State University - Rugby has grown at Arkansas State to the extent that the school is now able to offer partial scholarships for men and women Rugby players. Qualifying Rugby players from out-of-state may now attend Arkansas State for the in-state tuition rate.
Idaho State University - Idaho State offers out of state fee waivers. The tuition at Idaho State for residents is $2200 a semester for those who have their own insurance and $2600 for those who do not have their own insurance. Idaho State is a D2 program in the Utah Rugby Union. The cost to attend ISU without the waiver is $7500 plus per semester. With a waiver you save an estimated $4800 a semester. We are looking for the serious student athlete, who wants to continue their education and rugby career. We are proud of our 85% graduation rate since 1996.

The Doug Edwards Memorial Scholarship is annually supported by Doug's wife, Barb.
Our second scholarship is named after Lionel Young who founded Miami RFC in 1968 and passed away in 2004. Lionel was born in Birtley, England in 1921 where here played for Rockcliff RFC. After serving in the British army in WWII, Lionel emigrated to Canada where he played a part in founding two clubs in Toronto. Lionel started Miami RFC in the fall of 1968 and left Oxford for Florida in 1970. More information on Lionel can be found on page 2 of our August 2005 Newsletter. St. Bonaventure University - The rugby alumni at St. Bonaventure University have recently endowed the Robert Peraza Memorial Scholarship, in memory of a Bonaventure player who died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. SBU rugby alumni are responsible for finding a worthy recipient for the Fall 2007 semester. As the endowment grows, additional scholarships with greater monetary values will be awarded. This is a needs-based scholarship; we want to find high school rugby players who normally would not have the opportunity to attend St. Bonaventure University due to financial need. The amount we award is based on how much we can raise but it will be renewable to the same student for 4 years. As the scholarship grows, we will have more flexibility to the amount we award and the number of students we award it to. St. Bonaventure is the first Catholic University in the U.S. to endow a scholarship for rugby players.

Whether you've always dreamed of being a college athlete, or you're a U19 player aspiring for greatness, the Men's Rugby Club at the University of South Carolina has something for everyone. Founded in 1967, the University of South Carolina Men’s Rugby Club is the oldest club sport at USC, boasting a long and distinguished record of success over the years. In 2007, the club was promoted to USA Rugby South Division 1 where we have competed against renowned teams such as the Universities of Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, as well as Arkansas State and Clemson (which we have defeated in four straight matches). In 2008, USC continued to demonstrate its national notoriety with a proud showing at 25th in the Fall collegiate rankings (American Rugby News). In 2010, we will be playing in the new Carolinas Rugby League with two of our current opponents of North Carolina & Clemson, as well as four additional teams which include Wake Forest, East Carolina, Appalachian State, & North Carolina State. Our hard work is evident throughout the school year, as our season encompasses both the Fall and Spring Semesters. In addition to scheduled matches, we compete in a number of tournaments including the Southeastern Conference Tournament and the Palmetto State Tournament, which we have won more times than any other club in South Carolina.
Our recruitment strategy has met with abundant success enlisting players from the SC High School League, as well as from other state-based organizations to attend USC with the goal of playing rugby for our team. We maintain a policy that everyone has the opportunity to play regardless of ability. Combining this philosophy with our recruitment strategies, we are sustaining a roster of 65+ young men, which enables us to field three sides on any given game weekend. Our C side serves as our developmental side, currently competing in Division 3 with its own schedule and coaching staff. USC Men’s Rugby is proud to boast that we are the only team in South Division 1 that has three sides of competitive ruggers.
With the direction of six full-time USA Rugby certified coaches, our club not only teaches the love of the game, but also the many skills and techniques that are necessary to compete. As a note of great pride for our club, Head Coach Geoff Mason is the only former professional player coaching a collegiate rugby club in the South today. Less than three years old, our field is widely considered by visiting coaches, teams, players, and fans as "the most beautiful pitch in the South.” Our alumni are also among some of the most dedicated in the nation, with many donating both time and money to continue to support the club that taught them the game they love.
We would encourage everyone to check out our website at www.USCRugby.org to learn more about the club, our schedule, or collegiate rugby in general. It provides information on current players, team merchandise, and upcoming events. If you require additional information, or if you would like to arrange a visit during the season, you may contact us directly at [email protected].

Describe your program, facilities, commitment expectations, and any other details you think relevant:
The men’s team was formed in 1974 and is one of the oldest college teams in the South. We compete in friendly matches in the fall and within the South and USA Rugby competition structure in the Spring.
As a club, practices are three times a week in the afternoon from 4 pm – 6 pm. Weight training and additional conditioning is on an individual or unit basis (forwards, backs) outside of scheduled practice times. Cadets are expected to place academics first and foremost in their life, but we place a high priority on balancing their academics and military commitments with our team program. Practices are a mix of games designed to improve individual skills, build cohesive units and form a well-rounded, disciplined team with players that have the courage to make decisions and create opportunities. We value skill, determination and the willingness to try new things and make mistakes over highly structured play. We back this up with a sound instruction on Laws and the spirit of rugby that fits well with our leadership and values training at The Citadel.
The coaching staff works hard to make each training session rewarding and to teach our students about rugby. However, since practice time is short students are encouraged to study the laws of rugby and how the game is played outside of practice. We often take time to watch matches, review articles and ideas about the sport but each player should show the self discipline to learn about the game on their own as well. The Citadel Men have consistently done well in the South as a Division III side. We placed 2nd in the East Coast Division III National Championships in 2006. Although having one of the smallest student bodies in USA Rugby South we plan on moving to Division II in the next few years.

Additionally, expanded our club to include a B-side, which will pay dividends in the future by training less experienced players. We are a Division 3 club, but we have won numerous games against more established Division 1&2 clubs. We practice three days a week, and play games on the weekend. Rugby has been a Clemson tradition since 1967 and in those 42 seasons we have won South championships, produced South All-Stars and All-Americans, and established ourselves as one of the top teams in the South.
We are the second highest funded club sport on campus. We have access to our own field on campus and practice 5-7pm Tuesday & Thursday. We play in both the Fall and Spring, but never travel when there is a home football game. Joining the club is a great way to get involved on campus and provides great leadership opportunities.

We are a strong student driven organization with an excellent, experienced coaching staff. We are generally considered to be among the top 10 collegiate rugby programs in the United States based on our club conduct (we receive the greatest amount of funds from Student Athletics of any club on campus), our conference standings (SoCal Upper Division), and the awards of our former and current players. In the last 10 years we have had 42 All-Conference, 10 Collegiate All-American, 8 U-19s, 3 U-20s, 3 Eagles 7s, and 1 Eagles 15 selections. Some of our former players have found success playing for professional teams in England and New Zealand, former players also play for several of the nation’s Super League (OMBAC, Chicago Lions, Chicago Griffins), Division I, and Division II sides (Red Mountain– DII 2008 National Champions).
Tucson has a warm dry climate; students can expect to arrive in August to 100+ degrees; however by the time rugby practice begins in September temperatures have fallen into the 90s (with practice in the evening under the lights), by December days are in the 50s and 60s (perfect for rugby!). Spring conference matches typically take place in sunny conditions in the 60s and 70s. No snow or ice ever!
Rugby players get back out what they put into the program. If you expect to play at the Varsity level and beyond you should commit yourself to training with your teammates during voluntary running and lifting sessions outside team practice time, team practice is Tuesday and Thursday. If you are looking for a social rugby team you might look elsewhere, while we do enjoy our social time we focus our game at a competitive level and expect such attitudes from our players.

The Dartmouth Men’s Rugby team has established itself as one of the premier Division 1 collegiate programs in the United States. The Big Green, historical figures of east coast rugby, have three national final four appearances, 13 New England titles, and numerous National Championship playoff appearances, including qualifying four out of the last five years. Dartmouth has the highest winning percentage of any team in the tradition laden Ivy League, and has won nine of the last 12 Ivy Cup Championships, continuing a long tradition of besting rivals Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale.
The Big Green excels in the US collegiate ranks on a long tradition of professional coaching, touring, alumni support, community engagement, and rigorous student-athlete leadership development.
As the first American university side to tour the United Kingdom (1958) and Ireland (1962), Dartmouth has an extensive legacy of international exposure. Other recent tours have found the Big Green in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Cardiff, Dublin, and Rome competing against and training alongside some of the world’s most illustrious rugby clubs. Touring is just one of the many reasons why Dartmouth excels at developing numerous regional All-Stars, Collegiate All-Americans, and US Eagles.
Moreover, it is the stalwart support of the campus community, the College administration, and our loyal alumni base that sets Dartmouth Rugby apart. That support has produced a high performance club infrastructure with an internationally experienced coaching staff, enthusiastic home crowds, and as of the fall of 2005 a multi-million dollar clubhouse facility that includes three pitches dedicated to rugby football.

Our Division 1 team plays in the MARFU college premier division. Our competition is Penn State, Navy, Kutztown, Univ. of Maryland, Univ. of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Rutgers.
The Division 3 team competes in the EPRU and against LaSalle, Lehigh, Widener, Haverford, Swarthmore and Lafayette.
We typically have 60 -80 on the roster. We are usually ranked in the top twenty of the college D1 teams in the states.
Our field is natural grass and is located on campus. We have lights for night games and aluminum 30 foot tall uprights. We practice on the University of Delaware’s Football team’s practice fields. We have trainers at all of our home games.

SDSU Rugby is a program on the rise that provides a competitive and challenging environment for athletes looking to push themselves and to excel. We train 3 days a week in the fall, and 4 days a week in the spring, when in season. The team also works out in the Varsity weight room 2-3 times per week with a certified strength and conditioning coach, has pool regeneration sessions and video study sessions. Overall, we provide a very professional environment with former international players as coaches, and have produced numerous current and past Senior International players and All Americans (4 in 2009). The program has high goals to achieve and works hard to meet them. We have 3 teams, a Div 1 A and B side, and a Div 3 team, that is more social in nature, so there’s a place for everyone. Our players are a very tight group and SDSU prides itself on creating friendships and bonds within the team that will last a lifetime. For more information please visit www.aztecrugby.com

Describe your program , facilities, commitment expectations, and any other details you think relevant:
Our men’s program was founded in 2005 and our women’s in 2008. Despite Molloy College’s small size, the rugby clubs are by far the most popular organizations on campus. Our matches, even in comparison to on-campus basketball games, get larger crowds. As it is a club sport, we understand if players miss a practice or match here and there, but myself and the other coach (Scott Salvato) run it as a varsity sport. We practice twice a week, but expect players to workout on their own on a daily basis. Our home matches are played on a beautifully lined field on campus. Both myself and coach Salvato work on campus making it easy for players to get in touch with us.
Aside from our National Guard affiliation, we are sponsored by a local chiropractic firm who gives our player’s discounts for treatment; they also attend all of our home matches and stretch the players before the match. In addition, the college’s dance team performs during halftime of matches and a local bagpipe band leads our players onto the field at all home matches.

Application Deadlines: 1 February for Fall Semester, 1 October for Winter Semester
Scholarship opportunities: BYU does not offer athletic scholarships to rugby players, however some private funds may be available to help with tuition for exceptionally well-qualified candidates. All recipients of private financial aid are expected to work on campus to pay for room, board & fees.
Admission consideration opportunities: In exceptional cases, the team may support the candidacy for admission of otherwise very well-qualified applicants.
Describe your program , facilities, commitment expectations, and any other details you think relevant:
BYU offers a University-supported program with a rich history of excellence on the rugby pitch. The team plays its competitive schedule in the Winter Semester (January to the end of April). Team members are offered a superlative strength and conditioning program during the Fall Semester, with official practices limited to Saturday Mornings, allowing student-athletes to focus on academics.
BYU facilities include a full-size outdoor grass practice field, a world-class indoor practice facility that is shared with other intercollegiate sports, and an NFL-caliber weight training facility (with superior coaching during lifting sessions). The team shares sophisticated athletic training facilities (for injury treatment and recovery) and full-time trainers and Doctors that travel with the team.
The team’s picturesque competition stadium is called “South Field” and is shared with the University’s soccer programs. The stadium currently seats 2,200 fans in back-supported comfort. Plans are actively underway to expand the stadium to add offices, a press box, athlete changing facilities, etc. The team is very well supported by the local community and routinely attracts thousands of spectators to its home matches.
During the competition season, the team practices (or competes) six days per week, with Mondays usually devoted to film sessions and Fridays to a “captain’s walkthrough” for scheduled Saturday matches. The regular season usually includes 4 road trips during January and February. Mandatory study halls and team devotionals are held daily when on the road. Home games are usually played in March, with the occasional away match interspersed.
Since the team normally qualifies for post-season play, traveling-squad players will also be required to travel to the rounds of 16/8 and the national semi/finals. The rounds of 16/8 usually occur during final exams, so players will be required to adjust their schedules to take exams before the playoffs. The semis/finals occur after the end of the semester.
BYU actively recruits young men that exhibit high moral character, intelligence, a solid work ethic, and athletic ability. We offer an exceptional training environment, superior coaching, and wholesome camaraderie that is second to none.

Students with an AI equal to or greater than 40 are eligible to receive a partial tuition waiver. These partial waivers will be granted for the first year of attendance only. There is no application to complete in order to be considered for tuition waivers. AI Calculator: www.cwu.edu/~admissions/index.php/index-calculator

Our program finished our best season to date last year posting a 4-1 regular season record, placed 2nd in New England, 2nd in the North East, and ranked 10th Nationally. On campus we have access to a gym and locker room playing our matches and practice on the pitch at Lengyel field. We have considerable depth in players and have two coaches, Mark Grimes a former player who now resides in Orono and George Criner head of the economics department on campus. Though considered a club sport by the school, we have a dedicated following on campus and always pull in a good crowd on Saturdays. Most players pick up the sport during their first season and work closely with veterans to learn their positions and the rules of the game. We are a club sport that operates under the oversight of the athletic department. This means that as a club, we are self-managed, self-organized and self-maintained. We are able to keep the club spirit of rugby alive and well, but at the same time we get full benefits of the athletic department and facilities, because we are treated by the administration as a varsity sport. It’s the best of both worlds. As a club, no one is cut and everyone plays; but we are fully funded and have excellent facilities and equipment. We have a separate practice pitch and a separate game pitch, a predator scrum sled, excellent equipment, and our own separate athletic trainers. We have independent access to excellent gym facilities as well as a full, experienced, well trained coaching staff. The team is very committed, works hard and sacrifices a lot to be excellent.

The University of Utah Rugby program can assist with admissions. We hold our student-athletes to a high academic standard and require that each athlete maintains a 2.5 gpa or higher. The rugby team has access to tutors and academic advisors to help each student-athlete to achieve this. The rugby team trains four days a week and competes against the top universities sides every year from around the country. We have an indoor practice facility to use during winter months.
Here is what the USA Rugby webstie has to say about scholarship opportunities last year. Below that you will find a list of as many universities in the USA with rugby programs as we could find. If your university would like to advertise your club on our site please contact us.
Collegiate Club Scholarship Opportunities
In the United States, Rugby is primarily a club sport played on college campuses. Players generally pay their participation fees and the university may help the teams with access to training and competition facilities and financial help to cover some expenses. Given Rugby’s status as a college club sport, there are currently no full club rugby scholarships available at universities or colleges in the United States. For information about scholarships for NCAA women's varsity rugby, please visit NCAA Scholarships.
USA RUGBY is aware of only a few American Universities that currently give certain scholarships or stipends for club rugby players. These include:
Arkansas State University - Rugby has grown at Arkansas State to the extent that the school is now able to offer partial scholarships for men and women Rugby players. Qualifying Rugby players from out-of-state may now attend Arkansas State for the in-state tuition rate.

Albright College - Albright College's Rugby Program has received national recognition for its success on the field and our recruitment efforts. All interested freshmen and transfer students receive the same attention as varsity student athletes and top academic scholars. For those concerned with the affordability of a private liberal arts education, Albright offers an array of merit and need based assistance to make an Albright education feasible for many.

Palmer Chiropractic College - The Palmer College Scholarship Program offers both partial and full Rugby scholarships ranging from 25%-100% of tuition. School fees are approximately $21,000 per year. All first team players will recieve at least a 50% scholarship. 6-7 will recieve a 75% scholarship. And one or two players will recieve full, 100%, scholarships. St. Bonaventure University
The rugby alumni at St.

The national average four-year graduation rate is about 30%. The Citadel leads South Carolina public colleges and universities in its four-year graduation rate. The U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2009 recognize The Citadel in several different categories:
- The Citadel is the No. 2 best public college in the South for institutions offering master's degree.
- No. 5 among the best public and private universities in the South offering up to a master’s degree but few, if any, doctoral programs.
- The School of Engineering ranked No. 34 for best undergraduate engineering programs in the nation.
- No. 7 best value among institutions in the South
- The Citadel is a teaching college with a student-faculty ratio of 15 to 1 with highly qualified faculty teaching all classes.

The College of Charleston Men’s Rugby Club was founded in 2002. In our years of competitive play we have placed in many major tournaments in the South.

The tuition waivers are based on applicants' Admissions Index (AI) and are awarded starting February of each year.

Having around 30 members we practice five days a week and hope to return to NERFU and NRU this year with a chance at going to the national tournament again in the spring.

- have a commitment to community service and social justice
- want to make the world a better place
- are looking for an opportunity to develop spiritually and morally

- want to discuss ethical and moral questions inside and outside the classroom
- are enthused about living on campus all four years in a close-knit, community-centered atmosphere
